Titolo: Cicero in early Italian humanism – readings and responses from Petrarch to Leonardo Bruni

Orario e aula: 11:00, Lipsius/2.04

Abstract:

Cicero had always been a major source for rhetorical skills in the Middle Ages. In the Renaissance, however, humanists get interested in the man behind the rhetorical handbooks. This talk will shed light on some 14th and early 15th century responses to his life and character, but also look at his role as authority on the field of style and ethics. In order to better understand the early modern responses, they will be partially contrasted with ancient strategies of canonising Cicero.
